Personal Tax Account (HMRC Online)

UK tax glossary · Last reviewed: April 2026

Your Personal Tax Account (PTA) at gov.uk lets you view your current and previous tax codes, check your State Pension forecast, claim tax refunds, update personal details, and tell HMRC about income changes. It is free and available 24/7.

You sign in with a Government Gateway account. Most changes made online take effect within one to three payroll cycles. The PTA is the fastest way to correct an incorrect tax code or request a working-from-home relief adjustment.

The HMRC app provides similar features on a smartphone. Both the app and the PTA are recommended over phone contact for routine enquiries — phone wait times can be lengthy, especially in January and April.

Common questions

Is the Personal Tax Account the same as a Self Assessment account?

They use the same Government Gateway login but serve different purposes. The PTA covers PAYE and personal details. The Self Assessment section of the same login is for filing SA100 returns.

Can I see my employer's payroll submissions through my Personal Tax Account?

Yes. HMRC receives RTI (Real Time Information) payroll reports from your employer each pay period. Your PTA shows the income and tax reported, which is useful for spotting errors.
